How to Reactivate Inactive Customers: A Practical Guide
Winning back lapsed customers works best when it is selective and personal. This guide walks through choosing who to contact, what to say and how to measure results.
Find Customers Worth Contacting
Start from a list of inactive customers (see how to identify inactive customers). Remove anyone who asked not to be contacted, and anyone you have no lawful basis to email.
Segment by Value and Inactivity
| Segment | Description | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Lapsed regulars | Many past orders, high spend | Personal email or call |
| Recent lapses | Just crossed the inactivity line | Reminder of what they used to buy |
| Long-gone one-timers | One order, long ago | Low-cost general campaign or none |
Choose Priorities
With limited time, contact the highest historical value first. A small number of personal messages to valuable customers often beats a mass campaign to everyone.
Personalized Outreach Examples
"Hi Maria, we noticed it has been a while since your last order of our espresso beans. A new harvest just arrived; would you like us to set some aside for you?"
Reference what they actually bought, keep it short, and offer a clear next step.
Illustrative message; adapt to your brand and local rules.
Follow-Up Principles
- One or two follow-ups at most, spaced at least a week apart
- Change the angle in the follow-up instead of repeating the same text
- Stop when the customer replies or opts out
Who Does the Outreach
You do. Revenow identifies and prioritizes inactive customers, but it does not contact them for you; use your own email, phone or CRM tools. Revenow Agent is a planned future tier and is not available yet. See inactive customer detection.
Measure Results
Track how many contacted customers placed an order within a fixed window, and what they spent. Compare with a similar group you did not contact to see whether the outreach made a difference.
Common Mistakes
- Sending the same discount to everyone
- Contacting customers who opted out
- Counting every return order as caused by the campaign
